I must have absolutely NO voice left to qualify for a speech device.
As ALS is a progressive disease you are eligible well before this point, so DON’T wait!
I've lost too much mobility to use an AugCom system.
In over 2 years only 1 patient (of 300) was unable to use AugCom. Most systems are highly adaptable and the access method is "adjusted" as mobility declines. You rarely have to learn a new program either; just the access method changes.
AugCom is just a speech device.
It can also include computer use and environmental controls for TV/VCR/ Lights, patient alarm, etc.
I will not lose my voice.
Do not fall into this trap. Although not all PALS lose the ability to speak about 90% lose their voice at some point.
I have to use some "high tech" device.
An AugCom system can be as simple as a laser pointer identifying letters/phrases on a word board made out of wood/plastic and sitting in someone’s lap.
The computer voices are horrible!
Recently, the first human voices were digitized. The quality is almost as good as human speech
AugCom communication is too slow.
Although slower than talking, modern word prediction makes AugCom an efficient way of communicating.
I can't afford it.
In 95% of the cases there is NO out of pocket expense for the patient in obtaining the device.
