Steps in Obtaining a Speech Device
Obtaining an AugCom system for speech assistance or computer access involves several steps and can take 3-4 months. A PALS and their family should pursue a system as soon as medically eligible to avoid the potential of not having a system if/when they lose their ability to communicate. The process involves the following steps:
A. Enroll in Medicare and sign up with the MDA association (Free) for proper insurance coverage and AugCom grants
B. Get an appointment with a licensed SLP (speech language pathologist); usually at one of our ALS clinics to determine medical eligibility. Bring your Medicare/insurance card and MDA information with you to the appointment. If eligible you will be able to select your device from several options.
Note 1: For Heavy computer user's who use the Internet and email frequently be sure and ask about a "laptop based system", vs. just a speech device.
Note 2: If you have (or have on order) a wheelchair make Sure to give the SLP the model number so they can order a Free speech device mount for the chair.
C. SLP submits speech write-up and insurance information to vendor.
D. Vendor determines if device is covered by insurance or if additional funding is required (can take up to 6 weeks for this step)
E. Device shipped to PALS.
F. Vendor or ALSA of Georgia trains PALS and family/caregiver on using the system and customizing it to individual needs.
G. Laptop systems only: Device shipped back to vendor when insurance check received to "unlock" it and turn on computer functionality.
H. Additional home (or clinic) visits as needed to adapt the system if/when mobility declines and access becomes difficult.
